GBRIMC has everything you need in one place to start or develop your career in the maritime industry.
You could be working on one of the cruise vessels that carry tourists out to the beautiful islands in the Great Barrier Reef, or sailing as a Captain of one of the vessels that carry vital trade, or working ashore in one of the many ports around the coastline, a career in this vital industry begins here in Cairns.
The Great Barrier Reef International Marine College (GBRIMC) is Australia’s newest maritime training facility, right on the doorstep to the Great Barrier Reef and its warm tropical waters in Cairns, Australia.
The college is one of the best equipped training centres in the southern hemisphere, comprising of a Full Mission Bridge Simulator and Navigation Labs, Multi-purpose Emergency Response Training Simulator and a sea survival training immersion pool, as well as two training vessels to provide practical hands on training.
The college caters to local, national and international students looking to start or enhance their career in the marine industry. Programs are available that lead to the internationally recognised certificates required to serve on and operate all types of vessel from up to 12m in length to the largest ships afloat at over 400m in length, whether it is around our coast or to anywhere in the world.
For those still at school, GBRIMC’s school-based MarineTech program enables secondary students to receive relevant marine training while still completing their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
The college facilities are also available to industry operators for higher level qualifications and for research and development.
GBRIMC is a Queensland Government owned entity that is managed by a seven-member volunteer Business Management Group appointed by the State Government.
The GBRIMC manages the buildings and facilities and invites high quality training organisations to offer both accredited and non-accredited courses at the facility in Portsmith, Cairns.
The Australian Marine Training Network acts as an advisory body to the Business Management Group.
The current members include leaders in the marine industry encompassing coastal shipping, shipbuilding and repair, marine tourism and international yachting. It also includes leaders in the education field.
The GBRIMC Cairns campus is headed by a College Director who is supported by marine experienced teaching staff and a dedicated administration team.
