This qualification will allow you to act as a Chief Engineer on a vessel with propulsion power up to 500kW or as a Second Engineer on a vessel with propulsion power up to 750kW in the Exclusive Economic Zone. Learn how to work in an engine room, service and maintain internal combustion engines and operate deck machinery.

* These units represent the Shipboard Safety Skills Set MARSS00008 (Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS)). These units are delivered separately to the MAR40618 delivery (either prior to or following completion of this course). If you need to complete this, you will need to enrol for this separately. ** Note: The HLTAID003 First Aid unit is not delivered at GBRIMC. A student who does not have the HLTAID003 First Aid unit at the completion of their course will not be eligible for their qualification.
There are no entry requirements. Although, it is recommended that students be 16 years of age, have a minimum of Year 10 with a sound achievement in English and Mathematics or the equivalent, or gain mature age entry. To obtain a full MAR20418 certificate students need to complete 13 core subjects of competency. 8 of these 13 units of competency are delivered as part of the Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Drive 3 Near Coastal) course over 3 consecutive weeks. In addition, students must complete the 4 units of the MARSS00008 Shipboard Safety Skill Set in order to gain the full MAR20418 qualification. This MARSS00008 Shipboard Safety Skill Set is completed separately either before or after completion of the 3 week MAR20418 course. Students are given up to 3 months to complete all MAR20418 assessments (tutorials are available).
On successful completion of the Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal) qualification, the student will have completed the AMSA Final Assessment. They then may request an Interim Certificate of Competency once they have completed the Certificate of Competency Application Form 426 ensuring that the declaration section is signed.
Assessment Procedures:
Assessment involves written assignments, tests and practical demonstration of skills.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
RPL recognises your existing experience gained through life or work for which you may not have obtained a formal qualification. We will work with you to identify your existing skills and knowledge, and assess if you can then achieve a full or part qualification. This also helps to avoid unnecessary duplication of training.
