Seafarers drop anchor in Cairns for refresher training

Business is booming for the Great Barrier Reef International Marine College (GBRIMC).

The purpose-built training facility’s safety refresher courses have been a drawcard, attracting seafarers from across Australia.

GBRIMC Manager, Gary Haddock said that seafarers have been advised that certificates with an expiry date of December 2016 require revalidation.

“With this in mind, GBRIMC has responded to industry needs to accommodate refresher training for Masters, Mates, Engineers, Chief Integrated Ratings and Integrated Ratings and the courses have been very popular.

“The GBRIMC is one of the largest providers of safety refresher courses in Queensland and the courses are accredited by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA),” he said.

Mr Haddock said the campus has been extremely busy.

“Since the beginning of the year, we have been running safety refresher and revalidation courses on a weekly basis.

“This year, over 500 students have travelled from across Queensland and from interstate to complete our refresher courses.

“The GBRIMC also caters to Cairns residents and it’s great that more than 100 locals have also enrolled, choosing to further their marine training at home,” Mr Haddock said.

The success of the GBRIMC could also be having a positive flow on effect for the Cairns community.

“The majority of our students are from out of town and our estimates show these students could have potentially spent more than 1000 visitor nights in Cairns and money at local shops and restaurants, directly impacting our economy,” he said.

Mr Haddock said the GBRIMC focuses on competency based maritime training.

“It is vital that students leave here with the skills they need to be safe at sea.

“GBRIMC students gain hands-on experience to ensure that they are capable of meeting the mandatory sea survival, basic fire prevention and firefighting and advanced firefighting skills, required by AMSA,” Mr Haddock said.
